Uttarakhand Reaches Ranji Semi-Final: Poor Stadium Conditions in Dehradun Cost Them Home Advantage

Within just seven years of receiving recognition from the BCCI, Uttarakhand cricket has achieved a remarkable milestone by qualifying for the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 semi-finals. However, this achievement comes with a significant setback – the dream of playing on home turf has been shattered. A BCCI inspection team deemed Dehradun’s Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium unsuitable for hosting the semi-final match, stripping Uttarakhand of home advantage. The match will now be shifted to Uttar Pradesh.

On Tuesday, the BCCI inspection team visited the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Raipur, Dehradun. Pitch curator Rakesh Kumar highlighted serious concerns including inadequate drainage facilities, poor stadium maintenance, and substandard pitch surface. He stated that conducting a match under current conditions could pose risks to players’ safety. Consequently, despite creating history, Uttarakhand has lost the opportunity to host their Ranji Trophy semi-final. The match is being relocated to either Ekana Stadium in Lucknow or Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.

Uttarakhand’s First Semi-Final Appearance in Seven Years

Since receiving BCCI recognition in 2019, Uttarakhand cricket has accomplished something extraordinary in domestic cricket within a mere seven years. Before this season’s Ranji Trophy, Uttarakhand had reached the quarter-finals three times, but this marks their maiden semi-final appearance. The team scripted history by defeating Jharkhand at Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur by an innings and 6 runs in the quarter-final. In the semi-final, they face a formidable Karnataka side led by KL Rahul, featuring several international players.

What Hosting Would Have Meant for Uttarakhand

Had Uttarakhand been granted hosting rights for the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 semi-final, it would have been a watershed moment not just for cricket in the state, but for the entire region. The economic benefits would have been substantial. Cricket enthusiasts from across the country would have flocked to Dehradun to watch star players like Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul, and Karun Nair in action, boosting the hospitality sector and local businesses. Unfortunately, negligent ground maintenance has cost the state this golden opportunity.

Players and Fans Bear the Brunt

Following the decision to relocate the match, former CAU secretary Mahim Verma expressed his disappointment, saying it’s deeply unfortunate that Uttarakhand couldn’t host this historic Ranji Trophy semi-final. The team has delivered exceptional performances in a short span to reach their first-ever semi-final. Playing in Dehradun would have been immensely beneficial for local players and cricket fans alike. After the BCCI pitch curator found the surface unsuitable for a five-day Ranji match, the fixture was moved to Uttar Pradesh. This has dealt a blow to the state’s economy, tourism, and local businesses. Verma emphasized that since Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium falls under government jurisdiction, serious attention needs to be paid to maintenance and pitch quality. Only then can Uttarakhand hope to host such significant matches in the future.
